NYC Private Schools and Celebrity Students

by NYC Private Schools on February 24, 2010

Many people ask about the NYC Private Schools that include celebrities in their past ranks. Often, the most popular requests for Private Schools attended by celebrities center around celebrities that have a definite NYC presence, and few have the punch of New York’s own Robert DeNiro.

Robert DeNiro attended Rhodes Prep in NYC. There are many other famous past students of Rhodes Prep, including contemporary playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, legal scholar Alan Mayor Sokobin , and Clinton pardon recipient Marc Rich. Singer Jane Olivor, journalist Mark Kellner, and actor Rick Jason all walked the Rhodes halls at one time.

Rhodes was a college prep school located at 11 West 54th Street in Manhattan. In 1979 the building was sold to the US Trust Company and the school relocated to West 83rd Street. The school relocated again in 1992 to the Anglo-American School at 291 Central Park West and later became Dwight School, which itself is the alma mater of many famous personalities to include Vin Diesel, Paris Hilton, Truman Capote and Walter Lippman, among others.

Dalton has had many students who have gone onto Hollywood fame after attending a traditional type of school. Among those who attended Dalton or have chosen Dalton for their own children are Newscaster and Journalist Anderson Cooper, Tracy Pollan and husband Michael J. Fox, Claire Danes, Barbara Walters, Leonard Bernstein and Gloria Vanderbilt.

Collegiate is actor David Duchovny’s alma mater, and he is married to Brearley graduate and fellow actor Tea Leoni. American Pie creator Paul Weitz and many Kennedys have also gone to Collegiate.

Because of the nature of the Professional Children’s School educational approach, PCS is where many child stars have earned their education. The school itself is geared towards education no matter where the student may be. Among graduates of PCS are Adam Arkin, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christina Ricci, Tommy Hilfiger’s daughter Ally, Mischa Barton and Christopher Walken as well as the Culkin children.

With so many famous residents, it is no wonder that NYC Private Schools have seen their share of famous alumni.

School Uniforms and the Fashion Police

by NYC Private Schools on November 19, 2009

As more and more entertainment magazines, books, movies and television shows are focusing on the Private School world, many parents are finding themselves planting a foot firmly on the side of promoting school uniforms.

My daughter spends more time studying what clothes are cool and what can’t be worn anymore than she does studying for tests. She told me last week that she needed an entirely new wardrobe because she didn’t have anything to match pink patent leather Topsides. If I could get her mind off her clothes for just a moment, I think she could see what a smart and talented person she is.

Keeping up with the school fashion police has been an issue for students for generations, but the added disadvantage of having Hollywood enter the battlefield has pushed fashion into finding new trends every week rather than every year. Keeping ahead of the curve in fashion has, for many students, become a full obsession.

Students need to focus on their academic work and leadership skills in order to compete in the future, however a preoccupation with fashion becomes a parody of showing leadership and individuality. Many schools are taking this distraction out of the students’ hands by insisting they focus on school during school, and keep fashion on their own time. School uniforms are on the rise.

Parents are becoming more vocal in their support of a Uniform dress code in Private Schools, as are some of the true leaders in school student bodies.

It is possible that some parents are only becoming more vocal about Uniform Policies because the fashions of their own youth are now making a disturbingly fast comeback. As one mother said,

“I’d rather she wore a School Uniform than repeat the fashion disaster that was my generation.”
