We are excited to announce that Sandra Clifton, Founder & Director of Clifton Corner: A Tutoring & Coaching Center, will join us as a regular blog contributor in the areas of social intelligence & emotional literacy.
Sandra devoted the first sixteen years of her educational career to teaching high school English, creative writing, speech, and drama. After a challenging chapter in the inner city and then an exciting position directing theatre in the mountains of Virginia, Sandra found her forte: designing curriculum for high school students enrolled in college-credit composition. As an Adjunct Professor for the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Sandra supported seniors navigating through the process of writing and challenged students to find their authentic voice in college application essays. “Miss C” became an unofficial academic advisor as she guided seniors to pursue programs in colleges and universities where they could best discover their unique talents and to consider opportunities beyond their original expectations.
After moving to New York City, Sandra quickly became involved teaching Honors English to gifted minority students at Prep for Prep, a non-profit organization that prepares talented scholars for acceptance to independent schools, and she continued her journey at the Professional Children’s School near Lincoln Center. Then, during the rewarding experiences of teaching Upper School English at both Poly Prep Country Day and Packer Collegiate Institute, Sandra began tutoring children in their homes after school and fell in love with the one-on-one context of individual instruction. After completing two years of certification to become a professional life coach through ICF, Sandra juxtaposed her knowledge of the traditional classroom with the cutting-edge tools of coaching to create Clifton Corner: A Tutoring & Coaching Center in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Sandra now directs a team of ten tutors at the Corner to motivate and inspire middle and upper school students to achieve their academic and individual goals through better organization, motivation, and focus.
Sandra also serves as a Program Coach and Master Trainer of Emotional Literacy at Yale University. As an educational consultant, Sandra coaches teachers through individual observations and evaluations to implement the core anchors and vocabulary of this program to improve the emotional and social intelligence of the Catholic Schools in Brooklyn and Queens. This innovative program, designed by Dr. Marc Brackett at the Human Emotion & Behavior Lab in New Haven, significantly reduces school conflicts, bullying, and suicide while simultaneously increasing student achievement, interpersonal communication, and test scores.
Sandra is currently visiting over 35 private schools to finalize her membership with the Independent Education Consultants Association and recently became a co-facilitator for NYC Parents-In-Action. Sandra is also the founder of ‘A Brooklyn Vision’, a group of educational entrepreneurs in Park Slope who meet to exchange ideas about how to support the journey of parenting and educating families in Brooklyn.
