There are many reasons to volunteer in your child’s school. Your child’s school is their world outside of your home and as a responsible and caring parent you most likely want to know who is involved in that part of your children’s lives.
Many parents assume that classroom volunteer work is synonymous with the “Classroom Mom” role and includes many hours a week of monitoring, assisting and helping out physically in class. While some parents have the time, energy and personality for that type of commitment, not all do. For most parents, occasional volunteering is the answer.
Many parents volunteer an hour of their time once or twice a month to help out in the class or school and be a part of their child’s life there. Many parents volunteer twice a year for special events. Every parent who volunteers in their child’s class learns something new about their child, the school, and how it all fits together.
Volunteering in School
- You can share your own expertise. Are you a naturalist or biologist? You can volunteer your special skills by helping the class organize a butterfly rearing project or simply talk to them about some of your most fascinating encounters or projects. Are you an architect? Help your child’s class build their own arches and towers. Talk to them about structure strength in ways that they understand and enjoy.
- You can help ensure that your child and his or her friends are safe. Chaperones for special class trips are more than just a parent along for the ride. Other parents are entrusting their child’s safety into your hands. You can keep your child and the others safe and secure while being able to experience the fun and excitement of a field trip again. You may even learn something new.
- Special Events at schools come along only a few times a year and there is usually a waiting list for parents who want to attend. So many parents miss out on the special school holiday celebrations or school plays simply because parents are invited. Volunteer to help, however, and you’ll find that you have a front row seat to seeing your child and his or her classmates experience those special school events that they remember always.
Volunteer at your child’s school and become a part of the educational and joyous experiences that others only read about in the school newsletter. And the best part of it all is that your child will know that you took the time to be with them.
