Brooklyn Music School

by NYC Private Schools on May 2, 2011

Brooklyn Music School is a unique concept in childhood education. The concept is based on the philosophy that art is an intrinsic part of a person’s character and personality, therefore the artist within should be developed.

The school offers programs in music, dance, and the performing arts without regard for a student’s age, income, previous experience, or professional aspirations.

Founded in 1912, Brooklyn Music School is located in a historic part of Brooklyn in the Fort Greene neighborhood.

The music department offers instruction in vocals and the following instruments:

  • Piano
  • Bass guitar
  • Violin
  • Upright bass
  • Viola
  • Saxophone
  • Clarinet
  • Cello
  • Trumpet
  • Guitar
  • Drums/percussion

The dance program includes instruction in tap, hip-hop, jazz, and ballet with emphasis on classical techniques. Instruction is open to children ages three to nineteen.

There is also a cultural dance division, which offers classes in African and Latin dance styles. Classes begin at age seven.

Brooklyn Music School also offers enrichment programs for public schools as an outreach. The school serves the Fort Greene, Red Hook, East New York, and Brownsville neighborhoods.

There is a summer school program as well that includes instruction in both dance and music. Brooklyn Music School also provides performances in its theater and playhouse, which is also available for rent by the general public.

If you have a student who shows an interest or a promise in music or dance, enroll them in the Brooklyn Music School.
