Chickpeas Child Care Center is a parent-run cooperative started in 1981.
The center provides a full-day child care program for children two years, nine months old to five years old. They have one group that fits all the ages into one where children can learn to interact with others in a multi-maturity environment. The students can attend for three, four, or five days a week.
In addition to the regular curriculum, Chickpeas offers an Extended Day Program as well.
The Chickpeas philosophy is based on the observation that children are naturally curious. The school’s curriculum plays off of that natural curiosity by incorporating elements of the Bank Street method. Books are an important part of the learning process and children develop a love for literature throughout the learning process.
Another important aspect of the Chickpeas Child Care Center program is Universal Pre-K.
A typical day at Chickpeas begins at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. If weather permits, children play outdoors until 10 a.m. Then, students go inside for a story and a snack. After snack time, they play inside with building blocks, art projects, water, dramatic play time and dress up, writing, and a variety of other indoor activities. At 11:30 they enter a semi-circle and share their work with other children in their group. Before lunch they have another story and sing a song.
After lunch, children take a nap and then play outdoors again.
If a trip has been scheduled, then the program is rearranged to include the field trip.
Children at Chickpeas Child Care Center are exposed to a wide variety of activities that are fun and educational. The school is located in Brooklyn.
