Financial Aid Case Studies

As with any group, there are divisive factors that drive different parents to seek private schools for their children, and there are divisive factors among those seeking and receiving financial aid verses those that are not. Before anyone jumps to conclusions about family’s seeking FA, you should be aware of some common cases within the system.

Here are some common scenarios:

Jayson’s family receives financial aid for him to attend a top tier school. This inevitably makes itself public in any one of a number of ways. Some family’s are annoyed that they must pay full tuition while Jayson’s family pays a greatly reduced rate. Beneath it all, however, is a very common but little know factor. Jayson was recruited by the school. Jayson had a particular attribute or talent that the school wished to have in their student body, and actively pursued his family to let him attend their school. In return, they offered financial aid to assist the family with costs.

Olivia’s family pays a reduced amount of tuition on a sliding scale. Her family pays 10% of their annual earnings as her tuition. Another family pays the full tuition, which adds up to only 2% of their annual earnings. Is Olivia getting a ‘free ride?’ Of course not. Her family is actually paying more of their annual salary for her tuition than other, wealthier families.

There are many different types of Financial Aid, and many different kinds of families who receive it. IN the end, however, it is for the children and for their education, not for parents to decide who has the right to attend the school based on salary.
