Downtown Little School is a preschool that focuses on emotional and social growth in conjunction with cognitive and physical development. To that end, school faculty try to individualize the curriculum as much as possible to meet the needs of each student.
The school is modeled after Pace Little School. Kate Delacorte, who served as directory of Pace Little School from 1989 to 1999 cofounded Downtown Little School.
The program begins with two year olds. This is their first introduction to being away from Mom or the caregiver and so the focus is on a smooth transition.
Three year olds focus on family, the different types of families and how families help each other.
Four year olds learn about themselves by making a book of their school year that includes a catalog of their activities.
In the four/five-year-old program, students branch out to learn about the community, taking walking field trips, visiting local businesses, and then make a transition to formal types of learning.
Downtown Little School is a nurturing environment that respects families. Admissions information can be found on the school’s website.
