The Brearley School is an independent all girls NYC School that was founded in 1884 with the mission to provide its students with a college-preparatory education equal in rigor to that of boys. The current mission statement defines the school as a place to prepare students for active, responsible citizenship in a democratic society. This school has a well-earned reputation for graduating highly educated girls who go on to Ivy college educations. The Brearley experience includes academic excellence as well as a heavy involvement in the Arts and community projects.
A Brearley education encourages girls to take intellectual risks in an atmosphere that is both challenging and supportive. With the careful guidance of our experienced teachers, students discover their individual passions while learning to value multiple perspectives and to work with people who have diverse points of view. Brearley girls are problem solvers: they learn to evaluate what they hear, read or see, and in doing so they take control of the foundation of their learning, becoming both self-confident and competent.
The Facts about The Brearley School:
The Brearley School has a student body of under 800 students and an excellent student teacher ratio at about 7:1. It uses an average of 6 hours of classroom time a day and the current school calendar calls for a 164-day school year vs. the 180 in public schools.
The Brearley School is a member of the National Coalition of Girls Schools, the National Association of Independent Schools and the State Association of Independent Schools.
Balancing their unparalleled academic education with travel study, community service, a wide range of opportunities in the visual and performing arts, an extensive athletics program and an ever-expanding selection of student-run clubs and committees, our students also develop a strong sense of personal integrity; they take seriously their responsibility to engage with the world in productive and principled ways.
