Getting ready for private school admissions into kindergarten is one of the major hurtles for parents of preschoolers in NYC. Understanding the timelines in the process and beginning to map out your “Private School Application To Do List” is one of the first steps in the process of getting your young son or daughter in the right school.
While it may seem early to start preparing for next year’s school rush, Spring is the perfect time for you to begin asking BTDT parents about their experiences during this past year and trying to get a feel for the kinds of factors that may have played a role in their child’s successful applications.
Here is an easy timeline for Kindergarten Private School Admissions
- Summer: Getting the Prep Work Done
Once you have decided on the schools that would be a good match for your child, begin requesting admissions materials from them. For those schools that do not require an application to tour the facility, call them and schedule a tour. Make sure ask questions about their admissions procedure.
Schedule your child’s ERB testing, and any other tests that the schools of your choice may request. - Mid Summer to Early Fall: It’s Application Time
Mid summer to early fall, generally August through late October, is the time to send in the applications. Check with each school directly, on their website if possible, to find out if they have a submission deadline. Do not submit your application after the deadline! - Fall: Explore and Experience
Fall is when many schools offer their open houses for parents and families to tour the facilities. Some schools request reservations for their Open Houses, so check with the website or published materials to find out the dates and requirements for each school you plan on sending applications to. Parent/Child interviews and private tours are also schedule at this time of year.
The actual parent/child interviews and private group tours are held from early September through late November. - Winter: The Answers, At Last
By this time next year you’ll know which school your child is attending, and all of your hard work with admissions will have paid off.
