Mosholu Montefiore Community is an all ages center for children and families in the Bronx. While there are various programs for children and teenagers as well as daycare for infants, the preschool program accepts children ages 3 through 5 in a play-based nursery environment that stresses learning through discovery.
Mosholu Montefiore Community is open from 8am until 7pm and the preschool expects pickup at 6pm. Family involvement is stressed to the extent that extended families are often included in activities. The typical class day has the children in structured learning only for short blocks of time while longer amounts of time are devoted to both individual and group play as well as development of gross motor skills. Both indoor and outdoor play is available as are nature walks, music, dance, art and storytelling. Beginning reading, math and science skills are also encouraged.
The staff at Mosholu Montefiore Community maintains a small student-teacher ratio and a primary skill taught is socialization. They see the ability to be an individual and working well with others as skills that need to be taught as early as possible. Empathy and awareness of the needs of others both in learning to share and to take turns is important to the child and their ability to interact with others.
The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center supplies the children with breakfast, lunch and 2 snacks daily. A unique aspect of Mosholu Montefiore Community is the method of parent/child separation. The process takes place over the initial week that the child is enrolled. This helps the child feel secure that the parent will return to pick them up. If the parents are unable to attend for the full week, another close family member may participate in the place of the parent.
