The applications for spots in private schools are at an all-time high in NYC but there have been, surprisingly, few attempts to add more schools to the system. Let’s look at why this has been an issue.
The start up costs alone for the creation of a new private school in NYC can easily top the $40 million mark and the costs of attracting and employing top teachers, administrators and directors can be competitive. Once those hurdles have been met, the issue is then getting parents to apply to a new private school with no name brand and reputation.
The hesitation of some parents to apply for newly opening private schools is understandable given the impetus to apply in the first place.
Let’s look at the reasons to send your child to a private school:
1. Parents who actively search out private schools for their children do so, hopefully, because they want to have the best possible education for their kids. Evidence of that education is high test scores and alumni that have moved on to great High Schools and Colleges. If a school is new and just formed, there is no background basis for the types of test scores and achievements of its students. There is no reputation or history on which to base a decision.
2. Years down the line, a private school education should prepare children for the Ivies, along with the assumption that a private school’s reputation will add that ‘extra’ onto a college application and catch an admissions officer’s eye. The older, well-established, high reputation preparatory schools have a recognizable name and brand associated with them. New schools do not.
Now that we understand some of the reasons behind the hesitation to apply to newly formed private schools in NYC, our next discussion will center around the benefits of applying to them.
