Applying to any of NYC private schools require a lot of paperwork for families, and a lot of tests for children. Applying to any of New York’s private Catholic High Schools requires just a bit more.
There are three common Catholic high school admissions tests
- 1. CHSEE (formally known as the COOP test) is the Catholic High School Entrance Exam
- 2. HSPT is the High School Placement Test
- 3. TACHS is the Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools
There is a surprising lack of information to be found on some of the Catholic High School entrance exams at first glance, however there are preparatory books and practice exams available to assist your child in preparing for the tests.
When your child is in eighth grade and planning to attend one of the many Catholic High Schools in New York (there are eleven on Long Island) then the must take the entrance exam before the end of October or November, depending on that year‘s testing date.
The exam consists of many of the standard categories tested throughout your child’s education.
- Math
- Reading
- Writing
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
Just as with the PSAT and SAT tests later on, most recommend that your child learn and utilize test taking strategies to help them work faster and more efficiently during the exam. It is a multiple-choice exam and therefore lends itself well to preparation. It is designed to determine your child’s academic aptitude and skills achievement through eighth-grade. The CHSEE tests their understanding of language, reading, and mathematics, as well as memory and reasoning skills. New York Private Schools, including the Catholic schools require a serious student for advanced testing.
