Focus on Nursery North Infant and Toddler Center

by NYC Private Schools on July 20, 2012

Nursery North Infant and Toddler Center is a play-based nursery in Harlem that accepts children from the ages of 6 weeks to 3 years. The center is open from 7:45 to 6pm Monday through Friday. Lunch is brought from home. With the exception of infants, all children will have outside play as well as inside play.

The Nursery North Infant and Toddler Center has four distinct age groupings. Movement from one age group to another is based on the individual readiness of the child and not on their age. The youngest two groups, infants and mini-toddlers, follow the most flexible schedules. The children are treated as individuals and because at that age the needs of the children vary widely from one another, these groups allow for the most flexibility. When the child is ready for a more structured schedule he moves to the toddler room.

The toddler room has the children learn simple self-care skills such as dressing themselves and washing their hands. This is also often when toilet training takes place and this is a primary focus for this age group. Once these basic skills are mastered then the child is moved into the preschool group.

The preschool group at the Nursery North Infant and Toddler Center is the most structured group at the center. Here children will learn the beginnings of academic education such as beginning math, reading and science. There is also art, drama and music. The children are prepared to enter kindergarten and begin successful academic careers. These lessons are taught using a combination of teacher led and child led activities.
