The Facts on Manhattan Country School

  • The Manhattan Country School is a nonsectarian, co-educational day school.
  • The school was founded in 1966
  • MCS has a small student body with a student/teacher ratio of 9:1
  • A sliding tuition scale is available to applicants
  • Offers a unique agricultural experience to City students on “The Farm”

The Manhattan Country School prides itself on the ability to actually provide its students with a real country experience on “the farm.”

Many students in the NYC Private School environment lack education in a key area. An Agricultural knowledge and understanding is one of the most highly valued and yet underachieved source of growth in students from large cities. Beyond the obvious benefits of fresh air and plenty of sunshine, there is the ability to interact with animals and learn how studying biology in the field is much more fascinating than studying in the classroom. For a student interested in life sciences, feeling the crisp slice of cold from a mountain stream and studying geological changes in rocks dug with your own hands puts a tactile and emotional connection to the lessons learned in class. The Farm Experience offered by the Manhattan Country School gives students this opportunity.

Students in the 7- and 8-year-old range begin visiting the farm and by the time they are in 5th grade, they are spending 3 weeks a year there, spread out by 1 week trips in Spring, Fall and Winter.

One of the unique and most significant parts of our school’s academic experience takes place at a 160-acre farm in upstate New York. Here, students leave the city to learn invaluable lessons about community and interdependence, nature, and sustainability.
The farm gives students a priceless hands-on opportunity to learn. They tend the gardens, care for the animals (chickens, cows, pigs, and sheep), learn to weave, explore fields and mountains and streams, and study traditional and contemporary life in the Catskills

The Manhattan Country School provides NYC children with a rounded, multicultural and diverse education that does not forget to include our natural resources and environment as well.
