Overcoming A Lack of History in New Private Schools

by NYC Private Schools on October 3, 2008

Preschool ClassroomOne of the biggest, and hopefully the most important reason, that parents choose a private school in NYC for their child is the excellence of education. A private school education in NYC is a cutthroat affair, with some of the biggest prestige institutions rejecting over 90% of the applicants to their elementary programs. With so few spots available to children, it is no wonder that new private schools are opening in NYC.

The obvious question is, why aren‘t they filled? Why would private schools have such a hard time filling seats in what is obviously an environment that desperately needs them?

The answer to this is as easy as looking at the reason people apply to top private schools in the first place: Parents who actively search out private schools for their children do so, hopefully, because they want to have the best possible education for their kids. Evidence of that education is high test scores and alumni that have moved on to great High Schools and Colleges. If a school is new and just formed, there is no background basis for the types of test scores and achievements of its students. There is no reputation or history on which to base a decision. Families won’t be able to look at a new private school’s placement record in high schools for several more years, and colleges until 2015 and beyond.

Taking a chance on their child’s education is what most parents wish to avoid and the cause of applying to private schools with a rich history, but parents choosing a newly formed private school don’t have to jump blindly. Researching, reviewing and interviewing with newly forming private schools will give you an insight into their teaching philosophy and help you decide if it is right for your child.

The higher availability of spots in newly forming private schools won’t guarantee your child a spot, however. Private schools, even newly forming ones, have specific guidelines for their prospective students, and will enforce them earlier to ensure a respectable reputation.
