Focus on Phyls Academy

by NYC Private Schools on July 25, 2012

Phyls Academy is a school located in Brooklyn that accepts children from the age of 1 until they graduate the 5th grade. This school is open from 8am to 3pm Monday to Friday September to late June. There is an aftercare program from 3pm until 5:45pm and a summer camp.

The preschool at Phyls Academy stresses that a good foundation in education is needed for future success. The nursery school accepts children as young as 1 to begin allowing them to transition into a school environment. At that age the educational model is play-based with story telling, singing and learning to share being the most stressed factors.

For older children in the preschool, pre-math and pre-reading are taught as the children transition to a more academic environment. The teaching methods are primarily hands on at this stage and allow the children time to play both indoors as well as outside in age appropriate play areas. The younger children are kept from playing with the older children to ensure their safety. Artistic expression and exploring are developed and children take field trips when possible.

Phyls Academy uses the educational approach that young children should begin reading as early as possible. To that end, by the time a child finishes kindergarten they are reading fluently and ready to enter elementary school.

Admission is limited and Phyls Academy encourages parents to apply early.  Admission to the preschool is based primarily on available space. Preference to Kindergarten and Elementary school levels is given to children who attended the preschool, however, there are admission tests required.
