Private School Focus on Academy of St. Joseph

by NYC Private Schools on October 29, 2009

Many Roman Catholic Private Schools have a rich history dating back many decades, and sometimes more than a hundred years. There are, however, new additions to the Roman Catholic Private School cadre, including The Academy of St. Joseph on Washington Place.

The Mission of St. Joseph‘s:

to provide a comprehensive education that enables the intellectual, spiritual and moral development of students. This is accomplished by interested and dedicated teachers who motivate and guide their students through an academic and core curriculum integrated with the teachings of the Catholic Church, the humanities, and the wisdom of the ages.

This private school is located in the heart of Greenwich Village and affiliated with the Archdiocese of New York. The school is co-ed and welcomes students of any religion and background. Teaching academically gifted students from pre-K through eighth grade, the academy has been making headlines since it‘s opening in 2007.

Core Beliefs

Children thrive in learning environments that meet their developmental needs and that provide a respectful and nurturing environment.
The nurturing of the whole child is essential to the formulation of what it means to be a person of character, of competence, and of compassion.
Early learning experiences establish the foundation for the acquisition of knowledge, skills and values that will affect later learning and behavior.
A strong family-school partnership is directly correlated with student success.

Open houses for St. Joseph’s require registration, but there are numerous upcoming open houses available. Upcoming Open Houses are scheduled for:

Tuesday, November 17
Tuesday, December 1 (evening)
Tuesday, January 12
Tuesday, February 2
Tuesday, March 2
Tuesday, April 20

This new, humanities-based Roman Catholic Private School is dedicated to the enrichment of its student through exciting academic programs and activities.

My dc attends this school. I cannot rave more. Simply amazing. Loving, yet academically ambitious. And such nice, nice families. Highly recommended

This is a great new Catholic school in the West Village. The principal and teachers are extremely dedicated, and there is a focus on humanities and public speaking. The small class sizes allow a great deal of focus on each individual child, and there is a great sense of community. There are many family events. Great emphasis is placed on community service.

I remember being wowed at the tour I attended last year. I couldn’t belive how nice and posed the mom was who was leading it. Then I met the school head, Ms. Coombs, and was wowed by her. Of course I was also impressed with the new large facilities, the curriculum (which is out of this world), and the emphasis on creating children who are competent and have character. Now that we’re at the school, I love it even more than I did when I first visited it. More importantly, my child is thriving here.

My daughter started K here in the Fall and loves it. AOSJ has caring teachers, an outstanding head of school, and great teacher/student sizes. Rigorous academics with a lot of fun enrichment classes – foreign language (French and Italian), music, public speaking, art and gym–mixed in. Plus the school’s core beliefs really helps the students understand the importance of having compassion for others.

Both of my sons have attended this school and it a real gem. Small, caring, yet academically rigorous and equally attentive to the development of the children’s character and intellect. The teachers are great, the curriculum is impressive, and the principal is an incredible one-woman dynamo.

I can not rave enough about how fantastic the Academy of St. Joseph’s is. When I returned to Manhattan with my two children mid summer I was very concerned with finding an excellent private school for my children. My son being four, I asked friends recommendations, googled new york private schools, searched downtown preschools nursery, Tribeca schools, West Village and Downtown Montessori. I’d even toured a prep school in the financial district. When I found ASoJ, met with Ms. Coombs and toured the school I knew we found someplace special. It is such a warm nurturing environment providing an academically challenging curriculum and the parents have a wonderful sense of community. I rave about it to all parents and anyone who asks where my son goes to school.
