New York Private Schools are famed for the education and support they give students and the Cooke Center for Learning and Development continues that tradition. Cooke’s has an extensively trained professional staff of teachers and support personnel that develop individualized learning plans for each student in order to provide growth on both academic and social fields. The Cooke Center School was founded in 1987 by a small group of parents of children with Down Syndrome and is now one of the largest private, inclusive educational organizations for children with special needs in New York City.
The Cooke Center envisions a world where all children and adolescents with special needs are recognized as valued members of their communities and provided with the inclusive education necessary to assume the roles of their choosing.

The Facts about Cooke
Cooke is a Special Education, nonsectarian that provides for students from Pre-K through grade 12. It has a student/teacher ration of 4:1 and 7 hours of classroom time per day over a 180 day school year.
Admission to Cooke’s
The admissions process for Cooke’s is on a rolling basis and requires evaluations which are completed free of charge. Services and evaluations are funded by the NYC Department of Education.
Cooke’s caring, experienced and licensed professionals perform all of the evaluations required to determine eligibility for participation in one of our preschool programs. Conducted in the child’s home or preschool, evaluations include a social history; classroom observation; and educational, psychological, speech and language, occupational, and, if necessary, physical therapy assessments.
In addition to conducting the evaluation, Cooke staff accompanies parents to the Department of Education Committee on Preschool Special Education where an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will be developed for a child who requires services, and an appropriate program will be determined.
