Focus On Rainbow Montessori Academy

by NYC Private Schools on August 3, 2012

Rainbow Montessori Academy is a nursery and preschool in the Bronx that accepts infants and toddlers into their nursery and children starting at the age of 2 into their preschool. Parents are encouraged to participate in the school and 3 parent teacher conferences are required per year. Uniforms are required of children in the preschool.

The Montessori approach to infants and toddlers is to consider the child a whole person and to direct much of their own activities at this age. The school encourages structure while allowing a child to begin to learn independence, develop motor and verbal skills, and to engage in repetition as often as the child desires.

At the preschool level the Rainbow Montessori begins academic lessons. Children up to Kindergarten have homework 3 times per week and those in Kindergarten have homework daily. Children have lessons in many different subjects including:

  • Math
  • Writing
  • Computers
  • Art
  • Science
  • History
  • Spanish
  • Reading
  • Music
  • Basic Cooking Skills
  • Gym
  • Socialization
  • Basic Sign Language

The academic lessons are primarily hands-on and children learn by doing as opposed to sitting still in a classroom. Uniforms are required to help assist in learning and to provide additional structure. Tests are given along with homework and report cards and progress reports are sent home regularly. An hour of physical activity is required each day. This activity is broken up into two segments and is both free play as well as organized play. Field trips are also taken frequently to places of interest to the children. In the past this has included trips to museums, animal farms and fairs.
