River school is a Manhattan based all day nursery school that accepts infants from the age of 2 months to children through the age of 6 years (there are other locations in Jersey City, NJ). There are various programs based on the age and development of the child. Every class has at least one teacher and one co-teacher. The school is open all year with special summer activities. The hours are 7:30 am until 6pm (7pm at their Westside location.)
The River School, founded in 1989 by Dr. Richard Kresch, a child psychiatrist, believes that children are born with a love of learning and that their job is to facilitate that into a lifetime love of learning. Children learn not just from adults but also from other children and the school allows children to express themselves and learn to allow others to express themselves as well. There is no set academic curriculum because the River School believes that children learn best in a more free environment at their own pace. Children are taught through play and hands-on experience as they explore the world around them.
While children are free to explore and try new things, there is direction so that the school can give them age appropriate instruction in subjects such as reading, math, science and social studies. This is done primarily through stories, songs and games. There are field trips and outdoor activities designed to develop gross motor skills, especially in summer. Fine motor skills are developed through arts and crafts projects along with music and movement.
