Focus On Special Sprouts

by NYC Private Schools on August 27, 2012

Special Sprouts is a therapeutic nursery school for special needs children ages 2-and-a-half to 5. Located in Brooklyn, Special Sprouts has been in operation for more than 20 years. Every child has an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) that the school works hard to follow. Parents are encouraged to be active in the school and there are many opportunities to join in with other families. The school day starts at 8:30am and runs from September through June. There is also a summer program. Children bring their own lunch and the school supplies snacks.

Children with special needs are evaluated and an IEP is put into place. This is followed to ensure that each child has their individual needs met. Children are expected to arrive at school in play clothing and parents are encouraged to be certain that extra clothing is kept for their child at school. The school believes that “Messy children are happy children” and parents can expect that through art projects, play and various activities their children may get messy. With the exception of extreme weather, children have time outside every day. There are also field trips scheduled throughout the year.

Special Sprouts uses creative methods of teaching children with special needs including art, music, dance and play. There is story telling, circle time and free time. Children also receive necessary therapies from qualified individuals. Life care skills such as dressing, washing hands and tying shoes are also taught.
