Spuyten Duyvil Preschool is a Bronx preschool that accepts children from the ages of 3 through 4 for their play-based preschool and universal pre-kindergarten programs. Established in 1928, Spuyten Duyvil offers a varied schedule that includes early drop off and late pick up. The early drop off starts at 7:30am and the latest pick up time is 6pm. The school itself runs from 9am until 2:30pm. Children may attend 2, 3 or 5 days a week and parents may choose all-day or morning-only school. Spuyten Duyvil follows the New York Public Schools calendar and runs from September until June.
The teachers at Spuyten Duyvil present materials and ideas to the children weekly, but beyond that the activities are children initiated and child centered. The activities may include painting, writing, arts and crafts, cooking, playing in sand or water and building with wood or blocks. There are also games and puzzles that are age appropriate and designed to challenge and entertain your child. The activities and games are changed to provide a continuing challenge to the children. There is also ample time for outdoor play in the safe and secure outdoor area of Spuyten Duyvil. This allows children to develop their gross motor skills along with the fine motor skills that writing and painting help to form. There are also yoga and music classes weekly to expand upon a child’s natural love of both music and motion. Story telling and circle time are part of the daily schedule as well.
