Focus on St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s Early Childhood Program

by NYC Private Schools on September 1, 2012

St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s is a Manhattan school that accepts children beginning at the age of 2 (Beginners Program). While the school is an Episcopalian school, children of all faiths are accepted and diversity is encouraged. The school follows a traditional September through June Calendar and regular school hours are from 9am until 3pm. There is an after school program that runs from 3pm until 5pm. Parents are encouraged to participate in the life of the school. The school continues through the 8th grade and many students stay at St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s through 8th grade graduation.

While the preschool through prekindergarten is primarily play-based and formal academic learning begins with kindergarten students, children are exposed to a wide range of early educational concepts.  Pre-reading, science, math and similar academic subjects are taught through play. Parents have the option of their children learning Spanish, French or Mandarin Chinese. Arts and crafts are also used to help with fine motor skill refinement. There is both indoor and outdoor play available to help with coordination and gross motor skill development.

St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s considers learning to play together and learning to love learning are the most important factors in the preschool years. Play-based activities include arts and crafts projects, story telling, singing and movement. Formal education is gradually introduced and there are theme studies that focus on several aspects of a single topic to provide children with a well-rounded view of the subject matter.
