Thank You Notes: Why Do It?

Thank you notes are a part of the Ms. Manners culture that many of us grew up with. If you got a present, you wrote a thank you note. If someone did something extra special that you wanted to be sure you recognized, they got a thank you note. Sometimes, even if it wasn’t a big deal but you wanted to leave someone with a good opinion of you, they got a thank you note. (Admit it, we’ve all done it at one point or another.)

Writing thank you notes after you have toured, visited or interviewed with a private school is a good idea for all of the reasons that we’ve listed above.

1. If you had a pleasant tour or interview, you want to make sure to thank the school for their time.
2. If the school made special arrangements or allowed your child to shadow a student for the day, you absolutely want to thank them for adjusting their schedules for you and your child.
3. If you want to make sure the school knows that you are a gracious and thoughtful person and you just want that extra something in your application file, a thank you note is a good idea, too.

For whatever reason(s) that you are writing a thank you note to a private school, remember to not send it to just anyone. A thank you note is supposed to be personal, and nothing says “Generic, Mass-Produced and Unpersonal” than the heading “To whom it may concern.”
