The Open House
Most private schools in NYC have their open houses in the fall during the formal admissions period, however there are quite a few private school open houses that occur right after the first of the year. If you are curious about which schools have an open house coming up in a few weeks, check out the admissions section of the school website where they have that type of information posted. If they don’t have that information posted feel free to call the school’s admissions office.
Calling to talk with the admissions office is always a good idea because some schools require you to register for an open house instead of just dropping in. Also, some of the open houses are more formal that others and will have a formal welcome and presentation at the beginning of the night that you do not want to miss out on by arriving ‘free form’ style later in the evening.

A Good Idea for Open Houses:
See how the facilities look.
Gather information about specific programs at that school.
Get a first impression of what the students, teachers, and families are like.
A Bad Idea for Open Houses:
Asking in-depth a personal-specific questions about conditions that affect your family only. Save those questions for a personal tour or interview.
