If you are a high school student (grades 9 through 12) in any private school in New York City, then you have a chance to win $1,000 in scholarship money if you apply and submit an essay on humanism by March 31, 2013. The sponsor is the Humanist Magazine.
The essay length should be between 1,500 and 2,500 words.
The interesting thing about this essay contest is you can write about anything you want. The essay rules call for you to “apply head and heart to any subject or field endeavor.” How’s that for a vagueness factor?
I’d encourage you to get a copy of the Humanist Magazine so you can get a feel for the types of articles they publish. Some famous humanists include Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood, Arthur C. Clarke, John Kenneth Galbraith, Christopher Hitchens, Joyce Carol Oates, Margaret Sanger, and many more.
What the scholarship committee does not want to see are “personal scholarship style” essays.
There will be three scholarships awarded. So check out the magazine, apply for the contest, and send in your essay before March 31.
