NYC School Sports Vital to Health

by NYC Private Schools on November 2, 2009

A private school focuses intently on the whole body achievement of its students. Academic achievement and social skills that include individuality and leadership roles are important to the future success of students and are always included in the curriculum and mission of the school.

Fitness and Academic Achievement
A whole body education is about more than the academic ability to succeed and the mental capability to lead and innovate. A true holistic education must include physical education and competition. The mind is at its best with the full support of the body at its peak efficiency. So it must be said that another important factor to a top notch private school education must include an education in sports. Quality private schools know this and have highly active and competitive sports programs.

Many private schools offer athletic programs that can almost match a college or university’s program in size and spirit. Sports are often offered and participated in on a regular basis by the majority of the school student body rather than just a handful of the same students participating in all the sports.

According to a report from New York City’s Health Department and Department of Education (DOE),

Physically fit students tend to outscore their peers who are less-fit on academic tests. The observation comes from an analysis of data from NYC FITNESSGRAM, the comprehensive fitness assessment that New York City public school students participate in each year as part of their physical education instruction. The analysis also shows that childhood obesity remains prevalent in New York City – a finding that underscores the urgent need to ensure that school-age children receive nutritious meals, high-quality physical education, and ample opportunities for physical activity. “The clear associations between fitness and academic achievement highlighted in the report underline the importance of educating the whole child,” said Santiago Taveras, Deputy Chancellor I.A. of the DOE’s Office of Teaching and Learning.

An excellent sports program should be a part of a quality NYC Private School education.
