NY School Vaccinations for Hep B, Hib, PCV and Chickenpox

In order to protect student and public health, New York State requires that all school children obtain specific vaccinations or immunizations for many communicable viruses. The first vaccinations, for Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis and Polio were discussed in the first School Vaccination post,while the MMR vaccination for Measles, Mumps and Rubella were discussed in the School MMR Vaccination post.

The last in the list of vaccinations for NY School Children, are the Hib, PCV and Chickenpox immunizations.

NY School Final Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis B, Hib, PCV, Chickenpox
    Hepatitis B is a relative newcomer to the required vaccination list. This infection, spread by contact with bodily fluids, affects the liver. There is no known cure for Hep B.
  • Hib
    Haemophilus influenzae type b: This immunizations is required for childcare even in pre-school settings. It is a disease affecting children under 5 with up to 5% fatality in cases and 10-30% of survivors presenting with permanent brain damage.
  • PCV
    Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine: The PCV provides immunization against seven different types of pneumonia. Pneumonia is a phrase commonly heard, but the severity of it belies the common usage. Complications of pneumonia can be fatal.
  • Chickenpox
    Varicella: Varicella, also known as Chickenpox, can cause fever, weakness and the well known rash or blisters on the scalp, face and trunk. It also serves as a focal point for many infections to gain entrance into the body. In infants, it may be fatal, in children or adults with a weakened immune systems there can be a high risk of serious complications and death. Reye’s Syndrome is one complication that occurs if children with chickenpox are given aspirin to treat their fever.
