Parent’s Permission for Private School Admission

by NYC Private Schools on October 21, 2009

Most of the advice for gaining entry into a New York Private School is geared towards parents and helping them with the application process and assisting their child. Sometimes, however, it is the older student who is trying to get admitted into a Private School program, and they need advice on gaining admittance while at the same time gaining their parent’s permission to do so.

Explain your reasons for wanting a Private School education clearly and precisely. If you are want to attend simply because your best friend does, that is not going to be reason enough and you should rethink your entire process. If you want to attend a Private School because it will provide you a better education, however, then there is hope.

If you are an older student trying to convince your parent to let you apply to a Private School, here are some ways to help:

  • This is a mature decision and should be discussed maturely. Talk calmly and list your reasons.
  • Have a list of potential schools ready, and notes on why you have chosen those schools.
  • List out the pros and cons of going to a Private School, and show that you understand this is a sacrifice in both finances and personal time that your parents have to make in order for you attend.
  • Have the facts in front of you and be prepared to back them up.

If your parents aren’t sure that you are ready for the rigors of a Private School education, show them that you aren’t giving up, and that you are willing to work for it. Compromise, and tell them that you are willing to wait one more semester, or one more year, but that if you get all A’s, you deserve to apply for enrollment for the following year.

Wanting to go to a Private School is common, but proving that you are willing to work for it is often the key to gaining your parent’s support.
