The standards set for NYC Private School students are often set as a part of the school’s criteria for measurement and graduation. In other words, simply passing all of their classes does not guarantee a student the right to graduate. Indeed, many NYC Private Schools have rigorous requirements that include extra coursework such as:
- Advanced Placement Programs
- Community Service
- Arts Participation
- Grade Point Average
The high standards set for graduation from many Private Schools ensures that, instead of creating the over-achiever as the exception, the concept of achieving high standards and giving 100% is considered the norm.
The National Center for Education Statistics stated that
“Private high schools typically have more demanding graduation requirements than do public high schools. Compared with public schools, private schools required more .”
In addition to the larger coursework and GPA expectations, the special requirements such as community service or Arts participation often set Private Schools apart from their public peers. Courses and programs that would be considered extracurricular “after school” projects in many public schools are considered mandatory prerequisites for graduation in Private School.
This doesn’t mean that a student is forced to be in a specific club, only that the participation in areas and programs that focus on a more holistic educational experience are expected.
These types of requirements actually allow a student to explore activities and programs that form the foundation for lifelong interests, careers and hobbies that otherwise may have never been explored.

No discussion on public schools vs. private schools in NYC can take place with the talk turning to available academic programs between the two. Obviously there are schools that are the exception to every rule, both public and private, but as a benchmark discussion you can safely say that public schools are designed to target the median student at the median state level at the median federal level. Private schools tend to design their programs first around an ideology, then around the students that they accept who fit that ideology, and then customize that program to the individual.
NYC Public Schools: A Baseline
Public schools offer a general acedemic program that is designed for all students together. The basic study program consists of math, English, reading, writing, science, history and physical education. While the majority of public schools also include music and art classes, budget constraints in recent years have minimized those programs considerably.
The classroom lesson plans are often geared to prepare students to take state and government standardized tests. Most schools will lose their funding if their students do not have acceptable grades on standardized tests, so preparation for those tests is a major concern for schools.
NYC Private School Acedemics:
Private schools in NYC are ensured the flexibility to create specialized programs for their students. For those private NYC schools that have an ideology based on science, they are within their rights to use science in every class and make it a part of everyday life for their students. Many private schools utilize a much higher level of community involvement and out-of-the-classroom learning opportunities to “grow the whole child.”
Private schools can create their own curriculum and assessment systems, although many choose to use standardized tests in order to help their students achieve benchmark scores for higher educational pursuits.
