Private School Focus on Greater New York Academy

by Annette Robinson on January 10, 2010

Annette Robinson 2Greater New York Academy (GNYA) is a Seventh-day Adventist co-ed high school located in Woodside, Queens. The school houses approximately 200 students in grades 9 thru 12. According to Principal Mitchell, the school has a 100% graduation rate and a 98% college acceptance rate.

GNYA was founded in 1920 as a high school for the purpose of providing Christian education for the youth of the Greater New York Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. It is one of many secondary schools operated by this denomination for the purpose of furnishing the opportunity to obtain a Christian education under the most favorable circumstances.

The mission of Greater New York Academy is to provide a Seventh-day Adventist Christian educational environment within the context, philosophy and teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The source of true wisdom and understanding is God; therefore, the role of the teachers and administrators is to inspire the students with principles of truth, love, obedience, honor, integrity, and purity which are derived from the example of Jesus Christ.

“True education means more than the pursuit of a certain course of study… It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world, and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come.” (Education, p. 13).

The school’s guidance counselor helps students understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems as well as evaluate their abilities, interests, talents, and personalities to develop realistic academic and career goals.

Why Parents Choose GNYA

* GNYA supports their spiritual values.
* Students participate in worship activities.
* Students get involved in various types of outreach.
* Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement courses.
* All graduates receive a New York State Regents Diploma.
* All graduates are accepted to two or four-year colleges.
* Over 95% of graduates attend college

Proposed building expansion including a science complex, gymnasium and additional classrooms is underway.

The current annual tuition is approximately $5,600.00. Members of the Greater New York Conference of Seventh-day Adventists receive a monthly tuition discount of $160.00. Non-constituent Seventh-day Adventists receive a $110.00 monthly discount. The Greater New York Conference of Seventh-day Adventists grants scholarships in conjunction with local churches willing to sponsor a student.

In addition to her work through Get the Cap, Annette disseminates information and knowledge about various aspects of the New York City private and public school system to local community centers in Queens.
