Robert Berkman Joins NYC Private Schools Blog as a Contributor

by NYC Private Schools on September 3, 2009

Robert BerkmanWe are excited to announce that Robert Berkman, the director of Better Living Through Mathematics, will join us as a regular blog contributor in the area of mathematics education.

Robert taught mathematics and science for 25 years in private and public schools in the New York City area, including The Berkeley Carroll School, The Bank Street School for Children, and Friends Seminary. He has presented numerous workshops for the New York Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS), the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM.) His articles on mathematics education have appeared in professional journals, including Teaching Children Mathematics, and Mathematics in the Middle School. He is also a member of the working group for The Math Factory, which seeks to build the first museum of mathematics in the United States.

As the director of Better Living Through Mathematics, Robert works with schools around the country to offer first-rate professional development to teachers, compelling out-of-school programs to children, as well as opportunities for children, parents and teachers to enjoy mathematics together. He also consults with families to help demystify their children’s struggles with mathematics, offering practical and effective ways to improve their performance while lowering their anxiety.

Robert is also interested in the connection between visual arts and mathematics, and has developed curriculum that explores the underlying mathematics found in the work of such artists as Sol LeWitt, Jacob Lawrence and Isamu Noguchi. He has sat on the educational advisory boards of MOMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

A long-time Brooklyn resident, Robert enjoys cooking for himself and his two children, biking the back roads near the Gowanus Canal, and swimming in the city’s various waterways. He can be reached at rmberkman [at] yahoo dot com.
