Moving to NYC and Choosing Schools

by NYC Private Schools on January 20, 2010

If your family will be relocating to the NYC area in the near future, securing the right spot for your child’s NYC Private School education will most likely be one of your top priorities.

NYC is an amazing city in which to raise a family. It offers a diverse sea of cultures and opportunities simply unmatched in other areas. From art to history, science to literature and technology that is yet undreamed of, an education in NYC is a valuable gift for any child. The first obstacle is, of course, finding the right school and having your child accepted. This can be especially challenging if you are moving mid-school year or if you are moving at the beginning of the school year but missed out on the application dates.

You can research some amazing schools by a variety of means, including their philosophy and mission, academic history and even location. To be honest, looking at schools by location is often one of the first ways in which newcomers begin their search for schools.

New York City has one of the largest percentages of private schools in a relatively concentrated area with over 900 private schools available. Rest assured that you can find a private school that will be a match for your child’s social, academic and athletic needs.

Keep in mind that traffic is often an issue in NYC, and the location of your child’s school will most likely be a major factor in your final decision. While some NYC Private schools offer transportation, others do not and getting your child to and from school will be up to you.

Moving Your Child to a New York Private School

by NYC Private Schools on January 5, 2009

Moving Your ChildFinding out that you need to relocate to New York because of work related issues can be stressful, but what happens if that stress is compounded by the fact that your child, happily attending a great private school in your current area, must now find a spot in a NYC private school?

Changing private schools is never easy, but there are some steps that you can take to prepare your child and your family for the process.

For starters, begin with the knowledge that there is no time to waste. Private schools everywhere have tight competition for open spots, and NYC private schools have some of the most rigorous admission guidelines in the country.

Research:

Use some of our great tips to research the right private school for your child, including research on school philosophies, histories and key academic concentrations. Here is a great post on finding the right New York private school for your child.

Interview:

As soon as you know that your relocation is going to happen, set up interviews with the schools that you believe match your child and your family. An interview will give you a much better understanding of the school than a website or brochure. Since open spots in New York private schools are often hard to come by, you may have to accept being on the waiting lists. While the rate isn’t high, there are attrition factors that come into play during the school year, even some due to students moving to new areas, just like you are doing.
