Private School Focus on Dillon Child Study Center

by NYC Private Schools on September 1, 2009

The Dillon Child Study Center, a private early learning center in Brooklyn, NY, is located on the St. Joseph’s College campus. The location of this preschool and kindergarten program has enabled many parents to jokingly say that their 4 year old goes to college already. The Dillon Child Center, founded in 1934, is historically one of the first college preschools on the East coast.

Dillon

Licensed by the New York City Department of Health and registered with the New York State Department of Education, Dillon serves over one hundred children, with five classes for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children and an inclusive class of both typically and atypically developing children. In a child-centered atmosphere, children learn through play and develop confidence, competence and dispositions for future learning. All teachers have obtained or are working toward Early Childhood certification and their Master’s degrees.

The Facts on The Dillon Child Study Center:

With an enrollment of around 100 students, this small school program has an intimate learning environment. The student to Teacher ratio is 7:1. The Dillon school has a calendar of 180 school days consisting of 6 hours of class time per day.

Enrollment in Dillon

Families who are interested in Dillon as an educational choice for their child should plan on attending an Open House the year prior to their child’s desired attendance.

For those interested in the 2010 fall program, the open house dates are:
9/30,10/2, 10/7, 10/9, 10/14, 10/16, 10/23, 10/28, 10/30, 11/4, 11/6

Open houses are held at 239 Vanderbilt Avenue. Brooklyn, NY.

Families should register for the open house after Labor Day, as Dillon will not take names for registration before then. Open Houses are held on a first-come, first-served basis and generally only until they have received approximately 80 applications for 3-year-olds.

Once a family has attended Open House and filed an application, it will receive an invitation to bring the child in for a play date/visit in January

The director and at least one other Dillon Center staff member will circulate throughout the room, visiting with each parent and child. The domains of development that we will consider are motor, social and cognitive/language.
Each year, we have a limited number of spots in our 4-year-old and kindergarten programs for children who have not previously attended the Dillon Center. Families of these children must understand that we give priority to our returning families

The Dillon Child Study Center is a wonderful choice for an early Private School Education in NY.

NY School Testing Results in Higher Scores, More Arguing

by NYC Private Schools on August 7, 2009

Standardized testing results in NY Schools, recently discussed in a NY Times article, focuses much on the dissent among the political and educational professionals and their opinions on the recently released NY Public school’s testing results. Many believe that “teaching to the test” increases grade points but is detrimental to the overall education of our nation’s youth, while others argue that schools who do not “teach to the test” run the risk of high percentages of students failing, and thus rendering funding and sponsorship by the government unavailable under the No Child Left Behind program.

One of the hallmarks of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s seven-year stewardship of New York’s public schools has been an intense focus on standardized tests. The change has also aroused opposition, as critics question whether an overemphasis on developing test-taking skills is overtaking more valuable lessons in critical thinking.

the Bloomberg administration has used the rising test scores as evidence of improved teaching and learning under its direction. Still, educators continue to debate the true value of the tests and a curriculum guided by them, arguing that some of the rise in scores is attributable simply to students’ growing comfort with test-taking, and that some of the skills developed to prepare for the exams, like time-allocation techniques and multiple-choice shortcuts, are poor substitutes for true understanding of key concepts.

Critics ask: If students were really learning more and better, as opposed to just better learning the state testing protocol, wouldn’t their performance rise on all manner of measurements?

The argument here is valid and educators have been bemoaning the need to teach students testing techniques rather than a real understanding of the material but, overall, many of these schools are caught in a no-win situation. The interesting thing here is that, while many in NY celebrate the increased testing scores recently published, others are disagreeing with their validity all together.
