When you are reviewing private school websites and printed material to get a basic understanding of that particular school’s teaching and educational philosophy, you will no be left with a lot of unanswered questions. Gathering bits of data from this type of informational portal will not be a substitute for a positive school tour, and it will certainly not be a substitute for discussing the school with children and families who have children attending. Instead, insights like this into a school’s philosophy will give you a basic understanding of what the school is looking for in a student, and if it might be a possible match for your child.
If your child has strong artistic tendencies and rebels easily against rigid atmospheres, then most likely a traditional private school that leans towards a more strict style of education will not be right for you.
If your child is highly athletic and wants their physical educational excellence to be on par with their intellectual education, than a traditional school with a highly competitive athletics program would be a great fit.
You will be able to glean this type of initial atmospheric information from the school’s printed material and websites and weed out those schools that will simply not be a match for your child’s educational wants and needs.
Don’t waste your time, your child’s time, and the school’s time by touring, applying to and interviewing with private schools that will simply not be a good fit for your child, even if it might sound prestigious and be the ‘it’ school of that year.

Looking back to our previous post about the different philosophies and educational styles that different private schools promote and adhere, it is easy to see different approaches.
As a reminder, for the purpose of this discussion, we are looking only at ‘published’ philosophies and mottos that area easily accessible by the public through school websites and publications. When beginning the private school search, this is often the first research that parents do to prepare themselves and their children for the coming admissions process.
The three schools we chose to look at were Schools X, Y and Z. (If you are industrious, you’ll figure out which they are in the real world easily enough.)
School X’s philosophy and motto is compressed into the phrase “go forth unafraid.”
School Y’s philosophy is “work hard. Be kind. Take risks.”
School Z’s philosophy is “ lead and serve.”
Now obviously you cannot base a decision about your child’s academic future on a few words on a website, however with a little intuition and research, you can get a glimpse of what a school is about and what kind of student they wish to graduate from their halls.
School X uses the word ‘challenge’ a lot on their website and often refers to the things that can be accomplished if you follow their ‘plan.’ This is obviously a school with a lot of history behind it and the graduating alumni to back up that reputation. They are interested in producing graduates who will meet any challenge head on with confidence and strength.
We’ll discuss Schools Y and Z more in tomorrow’s post.
