Inside the ClassroomYou and your child will take many tours of private school that you have both chosen as possible candidates. If you have researched the school, it’s reputation and it’s basic philosophy beforehand, so take a moment to gather your information before the big night. Do you remember that spreadsheet that we recommended you keep to stay organized? Write down some of your notes about the school and their general touring protocols and review them before the tour.

Here are some questions to think about before your tour. If you keep these questions in mind, you will be able to better focus yourself on the tour and look beyond the immediate sales pitch to see what the real school is all about

1. How does the school look, feel, sound? Is it engaging?
2. Are the rooms cheerful and well equipped with updated materials? Is children’s artwork on display?
3. Do the students seem engaged in their work or play?
4. Is the degree of formality/informality in the school appropriate for your child‘s personality and educational style?
5. How does the school evaluate student work and when?
6. Does the school seem like a competitive environment?
7. What kind of academic support is available to students who need extra help?
8. What is the role of the arts, music, drama, and athletics in the school? Do they have programs that will engage your child’s non-academic interests?
