Athletics in Private Schools

by NYC Private Schools on December 23, 2009

Sports programs in the Private School arena are often dominated by specific athletic conferences in the area. The Ivy Preparatory School League, like the Ivy League for universities, was originally an athletic conference, not a scholastic one. It included a group of New York City, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk county university-preparatory schools.

The Ivy Prep School Athletic League currently includes

Collegiate School in Manhattan
Dalton School in Manhattan
Fieldston School in Riverdale, Bronx
Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York
Horace Mann School in Riverdale, Bronx
Poly Prep Country Day School in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn
Riverdale Country School in Riverdale, Bronx
Trinity School in Manhattan

Many private schools offer specialty sports programs to their students. Some private schools have multiple golf courses and flexibility in class times to enable students to tee off. Some schools have ultra-competitive hockey programs and many others have individualized equestrian programs. Fencing and lacrosse are popular as well as soccer, football and baseball.

Many private schools offer athletic programs that can rival many colleges and universities in both scope and quality. While academics are the main focus of any educational facility, sports are a major component on many campuses.

Trinity offers many sports programs to students, including:

Ivy Preparatory School League championships for Trinity include:

Baseball – 1955, 2005, 2006
Lacrosse – 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 2004
Soccer – 1978, 1981, 2006
[edit] Independent Schools state championships
